The majority of parents who choose homeschool over public school in this day and age do so because of the lack of opportunities and activities afforded their children. Many school districts are systematically eliminating extra curricular activities and clubs as well as a few standards such as foreign languages and music. For the average student this means that the only things that they may have excelled at are being eliminated. Some people may argue that eliminating all the extras means that the students will have to put their noses to the grindstone, after all, who said school had to be fun? This is precisely why parents and children choose homeschool.
If you take all of the fun out of learning, what is the motivation to study at all? Why do we feel the need to punish our children? Parents are also noticing an increase in the number and frequency of tests. They are left to wonder are the kids being taught to test or are they learning anything of value. What are the purposes of the test other than to prove that the teacher has ground the information into their little heads?
Parents choose homeschool because they love their children and they enjoy learning. Learning should be a lifelong activity, not just something to push through to get to the other side which is a 40 hour work week.
