Being a homeschool mom definitely has its perks but that is not to say that there are not some things about being responsible for the education of your children that are not difficult. If you are homeschooling your children you will find many rewards to this process. The first thing you need to decide before undertaking this endeavor is if you are able to commit yourself to it. Educating your child at home means being able to give them the time they need, the patience and encouragement they require and still maintaining the parental relationship that you have.
Teaching your children at home gives you the opportunity to watch them grow and explore in a new way. You will be the one to open their eyes to history, language, the arts and so much more. No longer will your child come home with tears in their eyes because the teacher would not explain to them the work they had to do that they could not understand. As a homeschool mom you will be there to make sure they understand the school work they must do. You will teach them to think for themselves, to push at the edges of learning, to be able to find the answers and ask more questions than they would feel comfortable doing in a classroom situation. You will teach them that there is more to school than sitting at a desk. You can show them different ways to learn.
This does not mean that you should have too relaxed an atmosphere in your classroom, but it does mean that you can teach in ways that your child will never learn in a daytime classroom. When your child is young learning should be more fun to keep them interested. As they age you will be able to get them involved in discussions that they may not be able to partake in otherwise as you get them thinking. You will also be able to make them a well rounded program that will take in not just the subjects that must be taken, but make these subjects, and their electives, more interesting because of the methods you use to teach.
Another advantage of homeschooling is reflected in the way you teach a child that does not fall into the average student mode. As a homeschool mom you will be able to offer your child an alternative if they have learning problems, a medical issue or are an above average student. As their teacher you will be able to tailor a program that will meet their needs. No longer will your above average child need to be bored in school. No longer will they go unchallenged. The same goes for your child who may have some learning problems. You can develop methods to teach them that a classroom teacher would not take the time to worry about. They do not have the time to individualize the needs of each child in a classroom that may have thirty children in it.
Your classroom may have only one child, or a few depending on the size of your family. But they will be your children and you will work hard to ensure that they get what they need in their homeschool situation. This is a big advantage in educating your children yourself and you will be proud of how well they do under your loving guiding hand.
